Walter “Chips” Volch


Walter “Chips” Volch, 76, of Avoca, passed away on Friday, June 3rd at the Regional Hospital of Scranton. He was born in Avoca, February 29th, 1940 and was the son of the late Michael and Stella (Drouse) Volch.

Walter was a member of Queen of the Apostles Parish (SS Peter and Paul Church), Avoca. He was a 1959 graduate of Avoca High School. After high school, he served with the US Army. Throughout the years, he was employed by Triple A Pants Factory, he was a delivery man for the Charlie Chips Co., Avoca, and he worked for Topps Chewing Gum until the time of it’s closing and retired as Avoca Borough Street Commissioner. Walter was the president of the Spike Island Sportsman Club, he was a member of the Brown’s Club, Avoca, a social member of the Avoca VFW Post 8335, West Side Social Club, Avoca, and the Dupont Polish American Citizens Club, Dupont. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Leo.

Walter is survived by his wife of 51 years, Margaret Joyce (O’Malley) Volch; his children, Walter Jr. Volch and companion, Nancy Pitts of Pittston, Joyce Williams and her companion, Carl Schwink of Plains, and Michael Volch, of Avoca; grandchildren, Eric Volch, Jessica Volch, and Marissa Williams; and great-grandchildren, Jonathan Volch, Noah Hinz, Caleb Volch, and Gavin Volch. Also surviving are brothers and sisters, Josephine Krymowski of CT, Anna Mae Sando of Hanover, Anthony Volch of Moosic, Michael Volch of Old Forge, Stanley Volch of Swoyersville, Robert Volch of Swoyersville, and Joseph Volch of Avoca as well as many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 7th at 9:30am from Kiesinger Funeral Services Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duyrea with a mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am at Queen of the Apostles Church, Hawthorne St., Avoca with Fr. Joseph Horanzy officiating. Friends may call on Monday evening, June 6th from 5-8pm.
