Elizabeth “Betty” Oleksy


Elizabeth “Betty” Oleksy, 84, of Moosic, formerly of Dupont, died peacefully Tuesday night in her home after a year-long battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Her loving husband of 53 years, Louis, died in 2012. Born September 28, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Mary Ritzie.

A 1949 graduate of the old Dupont High School, Betty excelled in athletics and after high school had a tryout with a woman’s professional baseball team. She truly was one of a kind and her personality was evident by all who knew her. She was the best pierogi maker in the world, loved dancing polkas, and made daily trips to her beloved casino. She especially enjoyed playing cards and going to the movies with her lifelong friends.

Babci is survived by her four children, son Louis, Jr. and wife Sue, Brooklyn, CT; three daughters, Ann Marie Layfield and husband Mike, Wayne, PA, Paula Oleksy, Olyphant, and Liz Oleksy, Moosic; five grandchildren, Derick Robidoux and wife, Christine, Julia Oleksy, Calli Oleksy, Kelly Layfield, and Sarah Layfield; and one great-grandson, Caiden Robidoux.

She is survived by two sisters, Connie of Mountain Top, PA and May of New Jersey. She was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph and sisters, Genevieve and baby Bernadine.

The family would like to thank her oncologist, Dr. Lisa Thomas, her associates and nurses for the loving and compassionate care she received over the years. They would also want to thank Dr. James Kosik for the excellent care he administered to one of his original patients.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, July 11th at 9:30am at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Lackawanna Ave., Dupont with Fr. Thomas Petro officiating. Friends may call Sunday, July 10th from 5 to 7 PM at Kiesinger Funeral Services, Inc., 255 Mc Alpine St., Duryea. Interment will be held at the parish cemetery.
