Paul L. “Catfish” Hunter, 73, of Duryea (formerly of Scranton) passed away on Thursday, August 4th at his home. Born in Taylor, April 18th, 1943, he was the son of the late Thomas and Lottie (Grabowski) Hunter.
Paul was a member of Nativity Of Our Lord Parish, Duryea. He was a 1961 graduate of Taylor High School. Upon graduating, he attended Coyne College, Chicago and in 1963 he joined the US Navy and served during the Vietnam War until 1969. Paul also attended Lackawanna Community College. He worked for various local businesses, most notably, Meals on Wheels, full-time and as a volunteer. He worked for over 28 years for Thompson Electronics until the time of it’s closing.
Paul was a member of the American Legion Post 207, West Side Scranton, and the Taurus Club, North Scranton. He loved to play golf and bowl. Paul enjoyed his countless trips to the beach and to the casinos of Atlantic City, Las Vegas, and area casinos, but most of all, he enjoyed being with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, the former Julie (Georgetti) Hunter; his son, Paul J. Hunter of Duryea; daughters, Debra A. Sowden and her husband, Todd of Duryea and Cynthia M. Hunter and her companion, Mark Zakoski of Old Forge; and grandchildren, Julianna Merced, Tyler Sowden, and Matthew Sowden. Also surviving is his brother, Thomas Hunter and his wife, Cathy of Taylor; his brother and sister-in-law, Billy and Bernadette Woelkers of Scranton and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 8th at 9:30am from Kiesinger Funeral Services Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea with a mass of Christian burial at 10:00am at Nativity of Our Lord Parish Church, Stephenson St., Duryea with Fr. Andrew Sinnott officiating. Friends may call on Sunday evening, August 7th from 5-8pm.
