Bernard Chernefski


Bernard Chernefski, 91, of Moosic, passed away on Tuesday, July 25th at Geisinger CMC Hospital, Scranton. He was born in Dupont, May 5, 1926 and was the son of the late Bernard and Estelle (Rydzewski) Chernefski.

Bernard was a member of Divine Mercy Parish Church, Scranton and a former member of SS Peter and Paul Church, Avoca. He was a graduate of Dupont High School and attended the University of Scranton. Bernard worked for Independent Explosives, Suscon. He owned and operated the Atlantic Gas Station in Greenwood for many years and retired from John Hancock Insurance after many years of employment.

Bernard and his wife, Louise were very active members of SS Peter and Paul Church, Avoca until the time of its closing. Bernard served as Co-Chairman of the SS Peter and Paul annual chicken dinner. He was also involved with helping to make pierogis for several church functions. He was a member of the Avoca Community Choir, the Gas Hollow Sportsman’s Club, and the Polka Gems. Bernard enjoyed the outdoors, and was an accomplished accordion musician. Bernard was a loving husband, brother, uncle, and friend and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Jerome and Eugene.

Bernard is survived by his wife of 67 years, the former Louise (Haduck) Chernefski and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 28th at 10:30am from Kiesinger Funeral Services Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea with a mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am at Divine Mercy Parish Church, 312 Davis St., Scranton with Fr. Francis Pauselli officiating. Friends may call on Friday morning, July 28th from 9:00am until time of service.
