Joseph J. Swieboda


Joseph J. Swieboda, 81, of Avoca, passed away on Monday, October 30th at Geisinger CMC Hospital, Scranton. He was born in the Greenwood section of Moosic, November 7, 1935 and was the son of the late Joseph and Stella (Rybacz) Swieboda.

Joe was a member of Nativity of Our Lord Parish Church, Duryea and a former member of SS Peter and Paul Church, Avoca. He was a graduate of Moosic High School. After high school, he joined the United States Air Force. Joe worked many years for Mid-Way Tool, Laflin and retired from Trion Industries Inc., Plains. He enjoyed watching sports, loved hunting and fishing, and his many trips to Canada, but most of all enjoyed being with his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Leslie; twin grandsons, Michael and Justin Swieboda; and sisters, Jeanette Bieryla and Dorothy Jasuta

Joseph is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Dorothy (Kolander) Swieboda; his children, Michael and his wife Rose, Springbrook, Lynn Kenney and her husband David, of Wilkes-Barre, Gary of Duryea, and Joseph of Seattle, WA; his sister, Ann Marie Rafalko, of Scranton; step-grandchildren, Jill and her husband Josh Frank, Jennifer and her husband Troy Graham; his step great-grandchildren, Jude and Ramona Frank; and many nieces and nephews.

A mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, November 4th at 9:30am at Nativity of Our Lord Parish Church, 127 Stephenson St., Duryea with Fr. John V. Polednak officiating. Friends may call on Friday evening, November 3rd at Kiesinger Funeral Services Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea from 5-8pm. Interment will be held at SS Peter and Paul Cemetery, Avoca. Family and friends are asked to go directly to church on Saturday morning.There will be no procession from the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
