Margaret Zinkavich, 92, of Duryea, passed away into the hands of the Lord on Tuesday, December 19th at the Riverside Nursing and Rehab Center, Taylor. She was born in Pittston, January 26, 1925 to the late Stephen and Catherine Merga Harmanos.
She was a life long member of St. Joseph’s Parish until its closing and was currently a member of Queen of the Apostles Parish, Avoca. Her love of music kept her active in the Avoca Community Choir and the Choir of St Joseph/Sacred Heart Churches. Margaret was a past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Duryea VFW, she was the financial secretary of the Ladies Slovak Society, a member of the Pittston Senior Center, the Cosmopolitan Seniors Club, and was a past board and founding member of the Duryea Ambulance Association. She volunteered for the American Red Cross, donating over 75 pints of blood over the years. She was an avid quilter and anyone, young or old, who is lucky enough to have received one of her quilts over the years can feel the love every time they wrap themselves up in their quilt.
She spent numerous hours volunteering at St. Joseph’s, Sacred Heart, and Holy Rosary Parishes making pierogis, soup, and potato pancakes.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband, Joseph; son, Joseph and wife Peggy; brothers, George, John, Steven; sisters, Anne Sleboda, Mary Boyanoski; grandson, John Garbush; and son-in-law, Carl Craig.
She is survived by her son, John and his wife Jeanne, Pittston; daughter, Mary Jordon and husband Dave of Petersburg, NY and Elizabeth Craig of Avoca, PA; grandchildren, Ann Zinkavich and wife Heidi Metzge of Richmond VA, Carl and Jessica Craig Avoca PA, Ellen Miranda and husband Anthony of Wynantssaill NY, Niki Hatalski of Wapwallopen, PA, Rodger Rugletic and wife Erin of Duryea, Melissa Antal and partner Dave Bungardy, Avoca; great-grandchildren, Ricki and Nate Hatalski, Arianna McMahon, Joseph and Aiden Craig, Cameron Rugletic, Hunter Antal and Brooke Bungardy; and many nieces and nephews.
A mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, December 27th at 9:30am at Nativity of Our Lord Parish Church, Stephenson St., Duryea with Fr. John V. Polednak officiating. Friends may call on Tuesday evening, December 26th from 5-8pm at Kiesinger Funeral Services Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea. Family and friends are asked to go directly to Nativity of Our Lord Parish Church on Wednesday morning. Their will be no procession from the funeral home. Interment will be held at St. Joseph Church, Duryea.
