Gilbert Shearer


Gilbert Shearer, 83, of Avoca passed away into eternal peace Thursday, April 19 at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. He was born in Winchester, Kentucky on October 4, 1934 and was the son of Walter and Sallie.

Gil was a veteran of the United States Navy and served during the Korean War. In the 1960’s, he was computer operations manager of the Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA, Bethesda MD and finished his working career at the age of 74, retiring from the Tobyhanna Army Depot.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his grandsons, Jason and David Shearer, Jr.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marita Gedrich Shearer; his sister, Elizabeth Rose Shrout of Winchester, KY.; sons, Gil, Jr. and his wife Bella of Honesdale, David and his wife Carolyn of Thornhurst, and Jordan of Avoca. Gil was a devoted family man who also had seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

A mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, April 24th at 12:00pm at Queen of the Apostles Parish Church, Hawthorne St., Avoca with Fr. Phillip Sladicka officiating. Friends may call on Monday evening, April 23 from 5-8pm at Kiesinger Funeral Services Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea. There will be no procession from the funeral home. Family and friends are asked to go directly to the church.

Interment will be held at SS Peter and Paul Cemetery, Avoca. AMVETS Honor Guard of Greater Pittston will provide military honors.
