Barbara Kresge


Barbara Kresge, 84, formerly of Avoca, passed away on Tuesday, May 1st. She was born in Avoca, November 9th, 1933 and was the daughter of the late Howard and Almeda (Smith) Shaffer.

Barbara was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, Avoca. She was a graduate of Avoca High School. She retired from the Scranton Wire Company, Old Forge. Barbara dedicated her life to her family. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend and she will forever be remembered for her caring ways.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Carl A. Kresge, who died on December 14, 2015 and her grandson, William Medeiros.

She is survived by her children, Stephan Kresge and his wife Julie of Pittston, Debra Rizzo and her husband Carmen of Pittston and Carol Healey and her husband Brian with whom Barbara resided, Inkerman; grandchildren, Chris and his wife Danielle Kresge, Jason O’Hop and his wife Jennifer, Jennifer Davis and husband Michael, Brian Healy Jr. and his wife Erika, Christina Medeiros, Michael Rizzo, and Jonathan Rizzo; and great-grandchildren, Alexis Gallagher, Owen, Renna and Maci Kresge, Autumn and Jacob Davis, Aiden Diaz and Colin Medeiros. Also surviving are her brothers, Gary Shaffer of Avoca and Rick Shaffer of Pittston; her step-sister Judy Colangelo of FL; and many nieces and nephews.

Barbara’s family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Compassionate Care Hospice, Taylor for their kindness, care and compassion that was shown to Barbara and her family.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 4th at 11:00am at the Bethel United Methodist Church, 532 Main St., Avoca with Rev. Sharon Dietz officiating.

Friends may call on Thursday evening, May 3rd from 5-8pm at Kiesinger Funeral Services Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea. Family and friends are asked to go directly to the church for services.There will be no procession from funeral home. Interment will be held at the Langcliffe Cemetery, Avoca.
