Melvin “Mel” W. Decker, Sr., 79, of Moosic, passed away on Tuesday, October 24 at his home. He was born in Moosic, August 7, 1939 and was the son of the late Adam and Violet (Heller) Decker.
Mel attended Moosic high school. He served in the US Army Reserve. Mel was employed as a truck driver for most of his life, having been employed by DeFazio Express Trucking until the time of its closure and he then worked for several local independent trucking companies.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Melvin Decker, Jr., his grandchildren Zachary and Faith Decker, his brothers Benjamin, Oscar and Adam, and his sisters Ruth Ann Moore, Jane Davis and Chilillie Poplawski.
Mel is survived by his sons, Michael, with whom he resided, and Scott of Avoca; his grandchildren Michael Matthews, Kari Slater and Melissa Lees; five great-grandchildren, his sisters Nettie Gaughan and her husband Joseph of Glendale, June McDonald of Scranton and Hazel Silfee of Moosic, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and his caretaker, Dee.
A blessing service will be held on Saturday evening, October 27th at 7:30pm at Kiesinger Funeral Services, Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea with Pastor Eric Ferguson of the Moosic Alliance Community Church, Moosic officiating. Friends may call on Saturday from 5pm until time of service.
