John J. Grella


John J. Grella, 76, of Avoca, passed away on Wednesday, November 7th at his home. He was born in Avoca on October 30th, 1942 and was the son of the late Frank and Mildred (Babiarz) Grella.

John was a member of Queen of the Apostles Parish Church, Avoca. He was a 1960 graduate of Scranton Central High School and he attended the University of Scranton. John worked for many years for his family business, Grella Sew and Vacuum, Duryea. He was an avid reader and was a classic sport car enthusiast. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers Joseph and Frank Grella, Jr.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nancy (Cavalari) Grella; his son Christopher Grella and his fiancé Nichole Sholcosky of Avoca; daughters, Betsy of Avoca, Mary Jane and her companion Kim Eckley of Avoca, and Lynn Marie Potoski and her husband Thomas of Exeter; grandchildren, Jonathan, Sky, and Kaelee; great-grandson Conor; and brother Richard and his wife Paulette of Duryea. Also surviving are his aunts Mary Jane Kuchar and Violet Grabowski, his brother-in-law Ernest Cavalari and his wife Mary and brother-in-law Ray Cavalari, his dog Jake and many nieces and nephews.

A mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, November 10th at 11:00am at Queen of the Apostles Parish Church, 715 Hawthorne St., Avoca with Fr. Phillip Sladicka officiating. Friends may call on Friday evening, November 9th from 5-8pm at Kiesinger Funeral Services, Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea. Interment will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Avoca. Family and friends are asked to go directly to the church for the mass. There will be no procession from the funeral home.
