Dorothy “Dort” V. Richel, 92, of Avoca, passed away on Monday, December 31, 2018 at her home. She was born in Avoca, March 28th, 1926 and was the daughter of the late John and Catherine (Piskur) Richel.
She was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Dupont. Prior to its closing, she was a very active member of SS Peter and Paul Church, Avoca. Dorothy attended Avoca Schools. She worked as a seamstress in the local garment industry, having been employed by Brooks Manufacturing, Old Forge for over 30 years and retiring from High-Grade Pants Factory, Taylor. Dorothy was an excellent cook. She enjoyed cooking and making pierogis for Church functions. She loved to travel, having been to every state in the United States and traveled extensively internationally. She was a huge Boston Red Sox Fan and absolutely loved attending her great-nephew’s baseball games. She was a loving sister, aunt, great aunt and friend and she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her siblings, “Fatty”-Adam, “Kid”-Johnny, “Goike”-George, “Yike”-Frank, “Annie”- Anna Richel, “Dusha”- Josephine Mokay, “Weisha”-Louise Witowski, “Honey”- Teresa Ferack, and Helen Mazur.
She is survived by her sister’s “Retta”- Loretta Boyko and Christine Rodgers, also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Dorothy’s family would like to thank Dr. Martin Moran, and his nurses and staff and also the nurses and staff of Allied Home Hospice for their excellent care, kindness, and affection.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 7, 2019 at 9:00am from Kiesinger Funeral Services, Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea with a mass of Christian burial at 9:30am at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 215 Lackawanna Ave., Dupont with Fr. Thomas Petro officiating. Friends may call on Sunday, January 6th from 4-7pm. Interment will be held at SS Peter and Paul Cemetery, Avoca.
