Burwin “Bernie” Charles Atwell, 76, of Pittston Twp. passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, February 8th at his home. Born in Taylor on March 16, 1946, he was the son of the late Charles and Mabel Strubeck Atwell, of Hughestown.
Bernie was a quiet, stoic man who loved and supported his family. He was a 1964 graduate of North East High School in Hughestown. He had a love for classic cars and enjoyed watching Jay Leno’s Garage. His dry sense of humor will be deeply missed.
Bernie worked beside his father Charles for over 45 years under the CBA Corporation “Porky’s Garage” in Hughestown.
Aside from his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife and best friend Linda Trubia Atwell on September 25, 2013. They celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary on April 15, 2013.
Bernie is survived by his son, Angelo, Mountaintop, daughter Kristen Welsch and her husband Matthew, Pittston Twp., adored grandson Cory Poplawski and his wife Natalie, West Pittston, and two beautiful great grandchildren, Riley and Ryan Poplawski, who always made Poppy smile.
The family wishes many thanks to the physicians taking care of him, Dr. John Prater, Dr. Mark Schiowitz, Dr. Valenti, Dr. Moran, a quick shout out to Dr. Michael Rittenberg, and Dr. William Charlton for a last minute check in. Thanks to the nurses and aids at Wesley Village Rehab, Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, Geisinger Hospital, especially PCU and 4th floor. Above all, the amazing nurses, and aides at Allied Hospice; Amanda, Ann, Deb, Carla, and Maria. Big thank you to Pittston Twp. Fire Department and Ambulance.
The family asks for memorial donations be made to your local fire and ambulance departments.
Lastly, to quote Bernie, he would always say “Better Days Are Coming”.
Funeral services will be privately held at the convenience of the family.
