Charlotte “Shirley” (McAndrew) Berlew

Charlotte “Shirley” (McAndrew) Berlew, 90, of Avoca passed away peacefully at Wesley Village Nursing and Rehab Center, Pittston, on Tuesday, September 24, 2024 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Avoca, July 30, 1934 and was the daughter of the late James and Mildred Shemanski McAndrew.b


A loving woman of strength and faith, Shirley prayed the rosary daily, was a life-long member of Queen of the Apostles’ Choir, Altar and Rosary Society, She was also a member of the original Avoca Jolly Girls.

 

Shirley tremendously loved her family, and filled Sundays with joy by making “Sunday dinner” a constant tradition.  The bond created amongst her grandchildren led to a closeness more often seen in siblings than cousins.

 

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Robert “Bob” Berlew, brothers, James, Albert, and Raymond “Chick” McAndrew.

 

She is survived by sons, Robert and wife, Kathleen, Duryea; James, Avoca; and Michael and wife, Erin, West Pittston; daughters, Marie Burns and husband, Joseph, Avoca; Leigh Recupero and husband, Anthony, Avoca; and Donna O'Malley and husband, Austin, South Carolina. Grandchildren, Maria Recupero English and husband, William English; Nancy Recupero, Todd and Ryan Burns, Shaylyn Berlew and husband Aaron Abel, Erin Berlew and husband Matt Newman; Grace Berlew and boyfriend Joshua Isakson. Great grandchild, August Abel. Brother, Francis “Butch” McAndrew, of Avoca, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.


A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, September 27, 2024 at Queen of the Apostles Parish Church, 715 Hawthorne St., Avoca at 10am with Rev. Phillip Sladicka officiating. Interment will be private and held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Avoca.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Queen of the Apostles Social Concerns Committee, 715 Hawthorne St., Avoca PA 18641 or to the Avoca Ambulance Association 740 Main St., Avoca, PA 18641.

Arrangements are made by Kiesinger Funeral Services Inc. 255 McAlpine St., Duryea.
