Diana “Mama Bear” Ryzner Slater

Diana “Mama Bear” Ryzner Slater, 52, of Duryea, passed away on Thursday, February 11, 2021 at Geisinger Hospital, Danville. She was born in Duryea, May 7th, 1968, and was the daughter of late Robert and Mary (Pearage) Ryzner.

Diana was a 1986 graduate of Pittston Area High School. She was currently employed by Komensky’s Market where she worked for many years in all aspects of the market.


Known as "Mama Bear," Diana was larger than life and fiercely devoted to caring for her family, friends, and her community. She loved the town of Duryea, and Duryea loved her. Well known throughout the town, she took great pride in serving her community whenever possible. She lived the "it takes a village" mentality and was well-rooted in the Duryea community where she was a nurturing, loving, mothering influence on all of the children and families she encountered. She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and the main caregiver to her parents later in life. Most of all, she was a tremendous friend who offered unconditional support and love to those who had the blessing of knowing her and of being loved by her.


Diana was survived by her husband of 23 years, Jack Slater; her daughters Harleigh and Cheyenne; and stepdaughters Jackie Slater Brown and husband Ken, of Duryea, Jennifer Slater, of Duryea and Julia Slater, of Pittston. Also surviving is her sister Donna Ryzner Farrugia and husband Jeff of Los Angeles, CA, her brother Robert Ryzner, Jr. and his wife Tina of Catawissa, her grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.


Friends may call on Sunday, February 14, 2021 for a walkthrough viewing from 11am-2pm at Kiesinger Funeral Services, Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea. Memorial services will be held at a later date. If attending the viewing, please be mindful that the funeral home has a limited seating capacity. Also, facial masks and safe social distancing are mandatory per CDC regulations.
