Elizabeth A. “Betty” Sauter

Elizabeth A. “Betty” Sauter, 93, formerly of Hughestown, passed away on Sunday, October 24th, at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.

Elizabeth was born in Carbondale, PA, the daughter of the late Robert and Mary Healy Tyson. She attended Carbondale area schools and graduated in 1945. She worked for a brief time for the Ohio Telephone Company and also worked in the local garment industry before her retirement.


Betty was a member of St. Joseph Marello Parish in Pittston. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 585, Duryea, a past member of the Hughestown Hose Company’s Ladies Auxiliary, and a member of the ILGWU. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Sauter; her first husband Francis Wilce; brother Robert Tyson; stepson, Joseph Sauter, Jr.; and stepdaughter Marie Troy.


Betty was a kind and generous woman; always putting family and friends before herself. She loved to cook and bake and was always happy to share with family and friends.


Betty is survived by her children, Robert Wilce, Carbondale and companion, Mary Lloyd; James Wilce and his wife Donna, Harding; Mary Golya and her husband, Stephen, Hughestown; and David Wilce and his wife Marygrace, Taylor; as well as her daughter-in-law Mariellen Sauter, of Scranton.


Also surviving are her grandchildren whom she adored, Laurie Wilce, Robert Wilce, Jr., James Wilce Jr., Donald Wilce, David Wilce Jr. and Abigail Wilce; step-grandchildren Peter P.J., Abigail, and Joseph Sauter; great-grandchildren, Danielle and Stephanie Pevec, Jamie and Peyton Wilce and Laci Wilce; and great-great granddaughter Layla MacCaffery.


She is also survived by sister-in-law Dorothy Tyson, Forest City and numerous nieces and nephews and their families and grand dogs, Aja, Mia, and Nala.


Betty was loved and cherished by her family and friends and will be greatly missed.


A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Joseph Marello Parish, 231 William St., Pittston on Friday, October 29th, at 9:30AM. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hughestown immediately following mass. Friends may call from 8:30 to 9:30AM in the church. Masks are encouraged.


Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Kiesinger Funeral Services, Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea, PA.
