James J. McGarry, 92, of Moosic passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2023, surrounded by his family. James was born on October 3, 1931, in Avoca and was the son of the late Eugene and Agnes McLane McGarry. Bernice (Laibinis) McGarry, R.N., Duryea, has been his loving wife for 57 years.
James attended St. John the Evangelist High School, Pittston. After graduation, he was employed in his family’s business as a truck driver, delivering Bartel’s beer up and down the line. James retired from Garlet Industries, Duryea, where he worked as a welder and in the receiving department. In his later years, James worked part time for Montage Mountain and the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour.
A lifelong reader, James loved to visit libraries and research topics on the internet. He collaborated with his son James on many automotive projects, traded book recommendations with his son Eugene, and raised tomatoes every summer. For the last 10 years, his granddaughter, Abigail, was the light of his life.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Eugene, who died in childhood, and by his sister, Jane Feeney.
In addition to his wife and granddaughter, he is survived by his sons James A. McGarry and his wife Jennifer, of Old Forge, and Eugene P. McGarry, of Belmont, MA.
A mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, December 22, 2023, at 10:00am at Queen of the Apostles Parish Church, 715 Hawthorne St., Avoca, with Fr. Phillip Sladicka officiating. Friends may call for visitation on Friday morning at the church from 9am until the time of mass. Interment will be held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Duryea.
