It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph Mihalka, Sr., who died peacefully at home on January 12, 2025, after a courageous battle with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). He was 76 years old. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and business owner, Joe was a hard-working man of great strength, character, and love for his family.

Born on December 12, 1948, Joe spent his life working tirelessly to build and operate multiple businesses including Mihalka Service Station, J&R Trucking Company, and Mihalka Trucking & Excavating. For the past 37 years, he enjoyed hauling asphalt for the H&K Group out of Locust Ridge Quarry. His businesses reflected his determination and commitment to excellence. His work ethic was unparalleled, and he earned the respect of both his colleagues and the community. Joe learned early in life from his mother “No workie, no eatie.” Despite the challenges that ALS brought into his life, he remained dedicated to his family, showing the same resilience that marked every aspect of his journey.
Above all, Joe loved his family deeply. He was the loving husband of 51 years to his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth (Betts) Mihalka. He was a proud father to Joe and Amy Mihalka, Mark and Jeanna Mihalka, and Christy and Bob Savakinas. He took great joy being “Grandpa Joe” to his seven grandchildren, Sarah, Megan, Maura, Max, and Maddie Mihalka, and Bobby and Emmy Savakinas. His presence was a steady source of love, guidance, and strength. Even as ALS took its toll on him, he continued to make his family a priority, always offering encouragement and direction. His legacy of hard work, love, sacrifice, and dedication will live on in each of them.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Helen Mihalka, and his brother, Albert Mihalka.
Joe was more than a businessman—he was a friend, a mentor, and a person whose hard work ethic touched everyone he encountered. He enjoyed being a lifelong member of the High Ridge Club, traveling to various destinations with family and friends, Crown Royal Manhattans, and last, but not least, his Thursday night meetings with close friends, which continued until his passing. His fight against ALS was nothing short of inspiring, and he faced each day with grace and courage.
A mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday January 17, at 10:00am at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 215 Lackawanna Ave., Dupont, with Fr. Thomas Petro officiating. Friends may call for visitation on Thursday evening, January 16th from 4pm-7pm at Kiesinger Funeral Services, Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea. Family and friends are asked to go directly to the church on Friday for mass. There will be no procession from the funeral home. Interment will be held privately at Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery, Dupont.
The family would like to thank the Dr. Ilieva and the entire ALS care team at Jefferson Health for their care and support helping Joe’s fight against ALS. They also extend thanks to his caregiver, Karen Zyskowski, and the ALS Association and his social worker, Mary Beth Tomczak, for their unwavering support. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the ALS Association.
Though we are heartbroken by his loss, we find comfort in knowing that his love and legacy will remain in our hearts forever. Lucky Dog 42 over and out, may he rest in peace. Keep on truckin’!
