Lois G. Wolfe

Lois G. Wolfe, 84, of Duryea, passed away on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Scranton on May 10, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Russell Stone Matthews and Helen Biggar Matthews.


Lois was a lifelong and active member of Langcliffe Presbyterian Church, Avoca. She was a graduate of Duryea High School, Class of 1960, and the Pittston Hospital Nursing Program, Class of 1963.


Lois was employed as a registered nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital in Scranton from 1963 to 1972. She then devoted herself to raising her family until the early 1990s, when she returned to work at PA Hutchison Company in Mayfield, where she later retired.


Lois was deeply involved in her church and found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved ice cream, crossword puzzles, shopping with her daughters, and animals of all kinds. Most of all, she treasured the time she spent with her beloved grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.


In addition to her parents, Lois was preceded in death by her first husband, W. James Hirthler, who passed away on October 6, 1983; her second husband, Chester Wolfe, who passed away on May 30, 1991; and her brother, Robert Matthews.


Lois is survived by her daughters, Lisa Rutledge and her husband, Joe, of Old Forge; Diane Hirthler, of Avoca; and Chrissy Bridges and her husband, Tony, of Riverview, Florida. Also surviving are her beloved grandchildren, Joey Rutledge and his wife, Kennedy; Michael Pieszala and his wife, Rebecca; Daniel Pieszala; Kayla Hirthler; her step-granddaughters, Maggie and Mollie Bridges; and many nieces and nephews.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Luzerne County SPCA, 524 E. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.


Memorial services will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. at Kiesinger Funeral Services Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea, with the Rev. Jimmy Hopper officiating.


Friends may call for visitation on Wednesday evening, July 8, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Interment will be held at Langcliffe Cemetery, Avoca.
