Lt. Colonel Charlotte E. Sanderson, 93, of Glendale, passed away on Sunday, October 3, 2021, at the Gino Merli Veterans Center, Scranton. She was born in Old Forge, August 26, 1928 and was the daughter of the late Edward and Helen Karp.
Charlotte was a member of the Springbrook Congregational Church, Springbrook Twp. She was a graduate of Moosic High School class of 1946. After graduation, Charlotte enrolled in nursing school at the Pittston Hospital School of Nursing from 1947-1950, and later worked as a private duty registered nurse.
Charlotte enlisted into the US Air Force in 1951. She compiled quite the resume while enlisted. She was stationed in Johnson Island and Japan during the Korean war from 1952-1956 and in 1958, she completed flight nursing school and remained with the flight crew until 1963. She was then stationed in Alaska from 1963-1964 and Vietnam from 1967-1968, where she received the bronze star while providing medical care to a quadrupled influx of patients at the height of the Tet Offensive. At that time, Charlotte was the nursing supervisor of the 12th United States Air Force Hospital, Cam Ranh Bay. Charlotte voluntarily retired from the Air Force in 1971.
While retired, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was an excellent bowler and
played with many clubs at Idle Hour Lanes, Scranton. She also enjoyed working in her yard and her home. Charlotte will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Nellie Aldrich, who died August 25, 2021.
She is survived by her brother, Edward W. Karp and his wife, Louise, of Glendale and sisters, Sally Powell, of Glendale and Nancy Miles, of Scranton. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 9th at 1:00pm, at Kiesinger Funeral Services, Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea with Rev. Doug Littleton of the Springbrook Congregational Church officiating. Friends may call on Saturday afternoon, October 9th from 12:00pm until time of service. Interment will be held at the Springbrook cemetery with military honors provided by the active members of the United States Air Force military detail team.
