Madeline Gillis passed into the hands of the Lord on October 2nd, 2025 at the age of 98. Madeline was born on September 25, 1927, in Duryea to Aloysius and Madeline Gillis.

She attended nursing school at Misericordia and began her nursing career in New Jersey. She eventually came back to Duryea and spent most of her career working at the VA Hospital in Wilkes-Barre.


She was very active with the St. Joseph’s Church and lived in Duryea until the flood of 2011, when she moved to Moosic and made new set of lifelong friends at her new apartment on Lawrence Avenue.


Madeline was pre-deceased by her parents, her sister Gloria Lynn, and her brother-in-law James Lynn, also of Duryea. She is survived by her nephew Gillis Lynn and his wife Lynn Jensen of Chittenden, Vermont, her great nephews Alex Lynn of Boston, Massachusetts and Peter Lynn of Rutland, Vermont, and her many friends and caretakers in the area.


For those interested in celebrating Madeline’s wonderful life, her mass of Christian burial will be held at the Nativity of Our Lord Parish Church, 127 Stephenson St., Duryea on Saturday, October 11 at 10am. Calling hours will begin at 9 am until time of mass with burial following the service at St. Joseph’s cemetery in Duryea.


Donations in Madeline’s memory can be made to Visiting Angels of Scranton, 2200 Stafford Ave., #600, Scranton, PA 18505 or the Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 30 Ed Preate Dr., Suite 108, Moosic, PA 18507.
