Marita Gedrich Shearer, 85, of Avoca, passed away on Friday, April 8, 2022, at Geisinger CMC Hospital, Scranton. She was born in Avoca on October 1, 1936, and was the daughter of the late Fredrick “Fritz” and Rita (Allen) Gedrich.
Marita was a member of Queen of The Apostles Parish Church, Avoca. She was a graduate of St. John’s High School. Rita was a member of the Red Hat Society. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Gilbert Shearer, who died April 19, 2018; her grandsons: Jason and David Rodney Shearer, Jr.; her sister Patricia Gedrich Matthews; and her brother Fredrick Gedrich.
Marita is survived by her sons: Gilbert, Jr. and his wife Frankie Ann Shearer, of Honesdale and David and his wife Carolyn Shearer, of Thornhurst; her great grandson Jordon Rodney Shearer, who resided with her; her brother Richard Gedrich, of Thornhurst; grandchildren: Shaun, Nichole, Tracy, Sarah, Jennifer; and several great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
A mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, at 2pm at Queen of The Apostles Parish Church, 715 Hawthorne St., Avoca with
Fr. Phillip Sladicka officiating. Friends may call for visitation at the church from 1pm until time of mass. Interment will be held at SS Peter and Paul Cemetery, Avoca.
