Mary Opiela, 91, of Dupont passed away peacefully at home on May 25, 2025. Mary was born in Dupont and a lifelong member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. She was born, May 14, 1934, to Mary and Frank Klimek.

Mary attended Sacred Heart of Jesus Elementary  School and Dupont High School. She worked as a seamstress and floor lady for Avoca Sportswear, Laura Fashions in Avoca and Center Fashions in Dupont.

Mary was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Bernard; her sisters Helen Barnak and Irene DeFiore; her brothers Frank, Joseph and Stanley; her son-in-law Mark Gensel and her grandson Michael Opiela.

She is survived by her children Sharon Gensel, Dianne McKitish (Steve), Lori Ann Vargo (David), Robert Opiela and Marie Opiela. She loved spending time with her nine grandchildren: Ashley, Lisa, Justin, Jonathan, Kim, Kathleen, Sarah, Nikki and Daniel and her seven great-grandchildren: Tyler, Logan, Jessica, Jaxson, Parker, Logan and Austin. She is also survived by her sister, Charlotte Barnak.

Mary loved getting cards, notes, phone calls and flowers from family and friends. She also enjoyed watching her soap operas in the afternoon. Time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was the highlight of many of her days.

The family wishes to thank Compassus Hospice Care, her nurses Joe Delia and Jennifer for their tender care, and iCare Elder Care for their services.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, June 2, 2025, at 10 AM at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 215 Lackawanna Ave., Dupont with Fr. Thomas Petro officiating. Friends may call for visitation before Mass on Monday morning from 8:30am-9:30am at Kiesinger Funeral Services, Inc., 255 McAlpine St., in Duryea. Interment will be held at the parish cemetery.

Because Mary loved receiving cards and letters, we ask that you brighten someone’s day by sending a note or card in lieu of flowers. Donations may made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.
