Michael D. George, Sr.

Michael D. George, Sr., 82, of Avoca peacefully passed away surrounded by his family on Saturday, November 23, 2024 at Allied Hospice, Wilkes Barre. He was born in Avoca March 12, 1942 and was the son of the late David and Mildred (Clifford) George.

Mike was a member of the Queen of Apostles Parish Church, Avoca. He was a graduate of Avoca High School, class of 1959 and was the proud owner of the famous Green Bay Packers colors, Mike George Service Station in Avoca for 49 years before officially retiring December 29, 2017. If you were ever driving through Main St, you'd be sure to see him pumping gas and laughing with his customers. He dedicated his life to not only his customers, but the community of Avoca. He was a founding member of the Avoca Jolly Boys, a member of Rainbow Rod and Gun Club, past president of the Avoca Lions Club, and initiated the annual Lions Club Christmas Light Project in Avoca. He was a regular member of the West Side Social Club and was recognized as "Man of the Year" on March 17, 2018 during the inaugural St Patricks Day celebration for his lifetime of service to the residents of Avoca.

Mike cherished spending his weekends up the cabin with his grandsons, brother Ned, and longtime friend Billy; sharing his love of hunting with all those around him. If he wasn't up the cabin, you could find him making his rounds at the local social clubs, but his favorite place to be was with his family. He loved nothing more than spending time with his daughter, Chrissy, grandkids, and great grandkids. His favorite title was "Pop". He will be greatly missed by all of us, but we know he was greeted with open arms by the love of his life, Kay, his daughter, Janice, and son, Michael.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary Catherine (Soroka) George, his son Michael George II, and his daughter Janice George, along with siblings David George, Thomas George, Joseph George, Mary Ann Sowa, Martin George, Donald George, and Theresa Marie Pollard.

Though my brothers and I left the area a long time ago it was a reassuring sight to see Mr. George at his gas pumps when we drove home. He was as reliable and respected as the Liberty Bell in Philly. As children we enjoyed the Saturday matinee movies he and the Jolly Boys put on at the Avoca Legion. My brothers played basketball and I twirled my baton in the games/parades they sponsored. My childhood was much enriched by Mr. George's work. When my maiden aunts needed a new vehicle he would get them a reliable car from the auctions and take their old one off their hands. They always said "Mike will take care of us". Mr. George…
