Michael E. Rohland

Michael E. Rohland, 78, of Duryea, passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at Geisinger CMC Hospital, Scranton, surrounded by loved ones. Born in Newark, NJ on August 15, 1946, he was the son of the late Walter and Alice (Kelly) Rohland.

Michael was a member of Our Lady of The Eucharist Parish Church, Pittston.  He was a graduate of Pittston High School, class of 1964.  After high school, he briefly worked with the Duryea Woodworkers before beginning a long career. He was employed for 28 years at Proctor and Gamble, Mehoopany, and later retired from Cee-Kay Auto Supply after 15 years of service.

Michael, better known as Mike, Dad, or Papa to family and friends, was a quiet guy on the surface, but underneath he was a kind, caring man who loved his family more than anything. He was always quick to offer a bit of dad wisdom (“The only job where you can start at the top is digging a hole.”). You’ve never met a Papa who was prouder of his kids and grandkids. He loved to hear stories about his grandkids especially (both human and fur).

Mike was incredibly generous, always offering to help his family with home projects or treating them to dinner on special occasions. He had a good sense of humor, and he knew how to take a joke and give it right back. Did he take a good ribbing for when he backed into the garage door? Yes. Did he ever let his son forget that he lost his good hammer? No. He had a good belly laugh, and if you wanted to hear it, all you had to do was wiggle your fingers and tease that you were going to “get Papa’s knees.”

Mike’s favorite place was at home with his wife, nestled in his recliner under a cozy blanket. He loved watching football and baseball, rooting for Penn State, the Steelers, and the Phillies. If sports weren’t on, he was probably watching an old Western. At dinner, when offered seconds, his response was always, “Nope. One and done.”  But he could always be convinced to have a second slice of homemade banana cream pie.

Michael is survived by his wife of 57 years, Donna Nyhart Rohland; his sons, Michael and his wife Rose, of Houston, TX, and Shaun and his wife Lindsay, of Harding; his cherished grandchildren, Michael and Tyler Rohland; and his sister-in-law Sandi Paczkowski.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are made by Kiesinger Funeral Services, Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea.
