William D. Bennie

William D. Bennie, 85, of Moosic, passed away on Wednesday June 14th, 2023, at the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center, Scranton. He was born in Moosic on November 22, 1937, and was the son of the late Robert and Agnes (Coleman) Bennie.

William was a member of Queen of The Apostles Parish Church, Avoca. He was a graduate of South Scranton Catholic School, Class of 1955. Upon graduation, William joined the US Army, having served for two years. He was employed by

Owens Illinois and retired from Techneglas Corporation with over 30 years of employment.


Bill had a strong work ethic from a young age, he started peddling papers at 8 years old. He hardly ever missed a day of work throughout his life and received several attendance awards over the years. Bill enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed discussing politics and working long hours tending to his garden. What best describes William was his Faith, Family, Country and Notre Dame Football. Bill will be deeply missed by his family and friends.


In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters, Ann, Joan, and Mary Bennie, Agnes Loftus and Margaret Johnson and his brothers Robert and Thomas Bennie.


William is survived by his with of 55 years, Joann Struchko Bennie, his son William of Moosic, and his daughter Helen Bennie of Moosic. Also surviving are his brother James Bennie and his wife Genevieve, of Moosic, his sister Mildred Cesare and her husband Carl of Moosic, several nieces and nephews, and his dogs Daisy and Winston.


Bill’s family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Kenneth Sabastianelli, Dr. Marianne Santioni, and the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Gino Merli Veterans Center, and his favorite nurse Leslie Yuhas from Comprehensive Health Care for their kindness, compassion, and excellent care.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may me made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.


A mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, June 19th at 11:00am at Queen of The Apostles Parish Church, 715 Hawthorne St., Avoca with Fr. Phillip Sladicka officiating. Friends may call on Monday morning, June 19th, from 10:30am until the time of mass. Interment will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Avoca.


Arrangements are made by Kiesinger Funeral Services, Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea.
