John Miles, 75, of Cape Coral Florida, formerly of Avoca, passed away on Monday, December 24th at the Hope Hospice Center, Cape Coral, FL. He was born in Scranton April 18, 1943 and was the son of the late Joseph and Helen Reilly Miles.
John was a member of Queen of the Apostles Parish Church, Avoca. He was a 1961 graduate of South Catholic High School, South Side, Scranton. John was employed for over 27 years with the Conrail Railroad. He retired from the Tobyhanna Army Depot in 2007 in Electronic Communication after 27 years of employment, having been a recipient of numerous awards from the Depot.
John was a United States Navy Veteran having served during the Cold War era. He was a life-time member, past commander and treasurer of the VFW Post 8335 Avoca. A member and treasurer of the Avoca American Legion and past treasurer of the Avoca Lyons Club, John was also a member of the West Side Social Club Avoca. A loving husband, father, grandfather, great grand father, brother and friend and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son Christopher Miles and his grandson John J. Miles.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, the former Patricia O’Malley Miles and his sons, Shawn and his wife Sarah Miles of Duryea and James and his fiancé Kelly Rowan of West Pittston. Also surviving are his siblings; Mary Miles Murphy and her husband Pat, of Scranton, Joseph Miles, Rita Kulesa, and Ellen Nagy all of Cape Coral, FL his grand children Margaret, Peter, Christopher, Riley, Colin and his step-grandaughter Agnes Kostiak Miles, great grandchildren Maggie, Rachel and Roslyn Miles his daughter-in-law Agnes Vermac and several nieces and nephews.
A mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 11:00am at Queen of the Apostles Parish Church 715 Hawthorne St., Avoca with Fr. Phillip Sladicka officiating. Friends may call on Saturday, January 19 from 10am until time of mass. AMVETS honor guard of Dupont will provide military honors.
