Bernadine A. Yesulitis Matechak, 85, formerly of Old Forge, passed away peacefully at Oak Ridge Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Taylor. Born on January 18, 1941, in Avoca, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Victoria (Kmiec) Yesulitis.

Bernadine was a longtime woman of faith. She was a former member of SS. Peter and Paul Church in Avoca and a devoted member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Dupont. A proud graduate of Avoca High School, Class of 1958, she went on to build a lifelong career as a bookkeeper, working for several local companies. She eventually retired from Trade Eastern, Inc. after many years of dedicated service.

In her younger years, Bernadine was deeply involved in church and community life. She served as a CCD teacher at SS. Peter and Paul Church and was an active participant in the Old Forge School District through the PTA and Band Parents organizations. In later years, she found enjoyment in trips to Mohegan Sun Casino and playing scratch‑off lottery tickets, but nothing brought her greater joy than spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her love for her family was unwavering, and she will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her parents, Bernadine was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, William B. Matechak, who passed away on August 25, 2008, and by her brother, Thomas Yesulitis.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Michelle Kovaleski, and her husband, Raymond, of Pittston; and her devoted son, Daniel Matechak, and his wife, Deanna, of Dupont. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Kayla Kovaleski and Ethan Matechak, as well as many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 190 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Wilkes‑Barre, PA 18701.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 30, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 215 Lackawanna Ave., Dupont, with Fr. Thomas Petro officiating. Friends may call for visitation on Sunday, March 29, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Kiesinger Funeral Services Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea. Family and friends are asked to go directly to the church on Monday morning; there will be no procession from the funeral home. Interment will be held at SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Avoca.
